Module 7: Expectation of Coaches

We ask a lot of our coaches. Milo and the Bull has built a reputation since its inception of delivering fun, effective and challenging workouts and none of this would be possible without a passionate team who care about all aspects of our gyms; from the tidiness of the studio to the thought process behind all of our programming. We believe that no small deed goes unnoticed and we are keen to reward our trainers who demonstrate attention to detail, thoughtfulness and are solution orientated as well as proactive.

Whilst all of our coaches are on their own fitness journeys (just like everyone else), we like to practice what we preach when it comes to exercise. Genuine passion for health and fitness is a necessity to be a coach at Milo and the Bull, as we want you to lead by example and challenge our members own perceptions of what they’re capable of. Bring your own passions and experiences with you into the studio whenever you’re teaching a class and chat with our Milo community about theirs at our team workouts, weekly classes and most importantly at our regular socials! We regularly plan events for our members throughout the year as well as promotions on classes and memberships and it’s really important this information is relayed to our member base after every class. All up-to-date information can be found on each studios notice board.

The following subsections contain information regarding all of our expectations for Milo and the Bull coaches and covers many different aspects of coaching and operating our studios. Please make sure to read carefully through each section.

Studio Guidelines & Product Knowledge

Each gym, by and large, has many similar instructions for operating. However, there are a few key differences across each one and it is vital you are aware of how each studio operates before you are able to take cover there. Attached below are three links which will take you to the list of guidelines for each of our studios. Regardless if you live closer to one studio than another, you must be familiar with all of our studio guidelines.

As the face of the studio whilst you are coaching Milo classes, you will act as the first point of contact for all new and existing members and should be fully aware of our product offerings. This includes instant recall of the price of our class packages and membership options. If you are unable to recall any product knowledge, then members will need to be directed to either our website or info@miloandthebull.com so we can assist them as best as we can. Any updates on class schedules and programming will be communicated through the trainer group chat, so it’s important to read any new new messages. You can expect a detailed explanation of each training block every four weeks and it is expected that you read any updates when available.

Trainer and Member Etiquette

By now, you should have a much deeper understanding of our core values and mission as a gym. One thing we pride ourselves on is our “shirts-stay-on” policy. We want everyone to enjoy the gym as much as possible and remove as many barriers to entry as possible. Simply put, people taking their tops off can make people not want to go to the gym. We politely ask all participants to keep their tops on during sessions to maintain an inclusive environment and this is made clear in our T&C’s. Whilst there is clear design difference’s between gendered gym clothes, we consider women’s sports bras as “tops”, as do most if not all gyms in the UK. Participants must arrive prepared with water and appropriate gym clothes and trainers.

All classes must start and end as close to the scheduled time as possible. We need to respect people’s time and make sure the 45-60 minutes they are in the studio are safe, fun and effective. It’s important to be able to use your best judgement and a common-sense approach when managing late comers to class. Is it their first time? Are they a regular member? Are they being disruptive? Do they have any injuries? Whilst we strongly encourage and enforce strict start times to our sessions, life can get in the way. If you can safely accomodate a late comer (within reason), we ask that you try your best to do so. We believe the natural cut-off for admitting participants is if they have missed the entirety of the class introduction and warm-up, as this presents clear health and safety implications. If you refuse someone entry, we will always hold-up your decision. This also goes for any confrontational situations. Milo and the Bull will always seek to understand why a coach made their decisions in such situations to ensure high standards of customer interaction. However, we consider all of our coaches to be thoughtful and considerate in their approach to these matters, and trust that they will make the most appropriate call wherever possible.

It is vital everyone is afforded your respect, time and understanding when participating in our classes and that they afford you the same. Everyone has paid to attend and has the right to be coached by a brilliant and attentive person and leave having had a positive experience - including you!

Audit System

By now, you will already be taking shadow shifts to better understand our style of coaching and the layout of our studios. Upon completion of these, it will then be decided on if you progress to your final audit. This is where you take a full class, by yourself, with members of the Onboarding and/or Leadership Team present. There are different categories (KPI’s) on which you are marked, including but not limited to studio readiness, class energy and programme understanding. Your final mark will then determine whether you are signed off and able to start teaching Milo and the Bull classes.

This audit remains in place for as long as you work across our studios and is used every quarter so we can maintain high standards and continue to drive individual growth and development. Every passed audit results in a £200 bonus for that quarter. When working for Milo and the Bull, the audit system covers many of the same KPI’s covered in your initial audit, but with additional categories relating to community and social media engagement, upholding our core values and studio organisation.

All coaches begin on the same rate of pay which is dependant on class occupancy: (0-7 people) £30 - (8-13 people) £35 - (14+) £37. After being on the team for 1 year, along with displaying great work ethic and community engagement, as well as delivering high quality classes, your rate of pay will be increased to our senior rate: £35 - £40 - £42.

Weekend & Cover Shifts

When you have successfully passed your onboarding and audit, you will be added to the Milo Trainer group chat and you will then be able to take cover and weekend shifts. Head Trainers will be aware that new trainers will need to take up as many of these shifts as possible in order to keep up development on the gym floor, but in order to ensure you can take some of these shifts you will need to have a decent degree of availability. As a jumping off point, maximising your weekend availability will mean you have the highest chance of gaining some shifts straight away. Inability to work any weekends will only slow down your progression and you may not be considered for future shifts.

Cover shifts can come up with plenty of notice or, in some circumstances, can come up with very little notice at all. We really appreciate when our coaches are able to pick up cover when it’s available and those who are willing to accept it more often are nearly always rewarded with being offered further cover first. Although we have three sites, Milo and the Bull really is one team, and being able to take cover shifts across different studios or swapping with other trainers if necessary demonstrates a coaches adaptability and sense of team work. We always appreciate those who can take on these shifts in emergency situations and this is always taken into account, along with quality of classes delivered, when considering coaches for permanent roles and/or further development.

Fittest

Above all things, consistency with training over the long term, can elicit powerful changes in the body. We want to help our members reach all of their fitness goals, and so a little help with motivation can make a big difference. We use Fittest across all of our studios in order to provide members with real, live feedback about the intensity of their training and to drive community growth.

Fittest is compatible with nearly all fitness trackers and is completely free to use. Set up in the studio is quick and streamlined and only has to be done once. From that point on, any registered fitness tracker will broadcast the wearers live heart rate onto the studio screen. Post workout, each user will receive a detailed summary of the workout.

We also use Fittest to run community events and inter-studio competitions, so want to push the uptake on it as much as possible. Similarly to studio news, you should draw peoples attention to Fittest pre and post workout.
